SAN DIEGO, June 16, 2008 —The Biomarkers Consortium, a collaborative public-private partnership managed by the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health, today announced its strategic focus on addressing High-Impact Biomarker Opportunities. These High-Impact Biomarker Opportunities represent pragmatic, high-priority areas of opportunity for biomarker identification, development, and qualification that promise to expedite therapeutic development and improve patient diagnosis, care, and treatment.

BETHESDA, Md., April 25—The Foundation for the National Institutes of Health today announced that it has received a $250,000 grant from the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust, the private foundation created by CVS Caremark Corporation. The three-year grant launches a Foundation for NIH effort to combat childhood obesity and improve physical fitness in children and youth with disabilities and funds implementation of the I Can Do It program at three participating sites—the Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Miami, Fla.; Slippery Rock University, Slippery Rock, Pa.; and the Hudson Valley Cerebral Palsy Center, Patterson, N.Y.

BETHESDA, Md., April 24--The Biomarkers Consortium today announced it will sponsor a two-part supersession at the 2008 BIO International Convention in San Diego on June 19, 2008. A 2:00-3:30 p.m. panel will address “Accelerating the Identification and Development of Biomarkers for Human Health Through Public-Private Partnerships.” The 4:00-5:30 panel will assess “The Promise and Progress of The Biomarkers Consortium.”

NEW YORK, Nov. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Leadership and senior staff of twenty- seven breast cancer funding organizations and advocacy groups met on November 1-2 along with experts from government agencies, scientists from academic institutions and researchers from the pharmaceutical industry at the unprecedented Collaborative Summit on Breast Cancer Research. This first meeting of its kind in the US took place in Leesburg, VA, outside Washington, DC, and included some 100 invited participants. Special host for the event was Paula Zahn.

BETHESDA, Md. Aug. 17--The Foundation for National Institutes of Health is the top-rated charity among the 593 health category charities rated by Charity Navigator and, with an overall 69.72 score (out of a possible 70.00), the third highest rated among all 5,327 charities it evaluates, according to the organization’s Web-posted August 2007 evaluations.  Charity Navigator rates charities by evaluating the charity's organizational efficiency, organizational capacity, and overall financial health.

BETHESDA, Md., July 22—Contributing membership in The Biomarkers Consortium now totals 30 companies and non-profit trade associations and advocacy groups, it was announced today. To date, these organizations have committed an aggregate of nearly $2 million to fund the first year of the central activities of the consortium which is managed be the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health.

BETHESDA, Md., June 27-- With funding and support from the GAIN initiative, a 600,000 tag SNP genome-wide association scan of 958 parent-child trios will be completed from Dr. Stephen Faraone's International Multisite ADHD Genetics (IMAGE) project, in order to assess the association of SNP markers with ADHD, impute genotypes for siblings in the GAIN trio families, analyze quantitative ADHD phenotypes, complete copy number analyses, assess parent of origin effects and season of birth effects, and to test for epistasis among apparently uncorrelated genes.

BETHESDA, Md. , June 11--Alzheimer’s disease researchers may be able to reduce the time and expense associated with clinical trials, according to early results from the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI), a public-private research partnership organized by the National Institutes of Health. Preliminary results from ADNI show how it might yield improved methods and uniform standards for imaging and biomarker analysis, so these techniques can be employed in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease.

BETHESDA, Md., June 6--The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has selected the 30 participants for its 2007-2008 Clinical Research Training Program for Medical and Dental Students. They will begin their fellowships at the NIH campus in July and August.  The fellowships afford medical and dental students who have completed their clinical rotations the opportunity to work at NIH for 12 months in their chosen field of clinical or translational research.

Anthony Altar, Ph.D., has joined the staff of the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health as director of The Biomarkers Consortium.  The Biomarkers Consortium is a large-scale, public-private biomedical research partnership formed to identify and qualify new, quantitative measures or characteristics — biological markers (“biomarkers”) — for use by biomedical researchers, regulators, and health care providers.

BETHESDA, Md., Nov. 14--The Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) today announced the launch of a public-private partnership to conduct a clinical trial with 300 patients with schizophrenia to determine the effect of aripiprazole vs continued treatment with olanzapine, quetiapine or risperidone on metabolic changes, including weight gain and non-HDL cholesterol, that are common side effects of many schizophrenia treatments. These metabolic changes are associated with a significantly increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

BETHESDA, Md., Aug. 1 - Thirty medical students representing 19 schools from around the country have been selected for fellowships in the 2006-2007 Clinical Research Training Program (CRTP) for Medical and Dental Students at the National Institutes of Health, it was announced today. The recipients, who have completed clinical rotations at their home institutions, arrive this summer at the NIH to begin 12 months of clinical and translational research training in their chosen field.  This is the program’s tenth year.

BETHESDA, Md., Mar. 15--The Foundation for the National Institutes of Health is soliciting study proposals for inclusion in the Genetic Association Information Network (GAIN), it was announced today.  The Foundation for NIH, which manages GAIN, invites investigators at universities and research centers worldwide to submit applications to have existing disease-specific samples from case-control (or similar) studies genotyped at no cost.  Applications will be peer-reviewed by scientific experts from academia, government, and industry.

The Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) -- a project developed by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) -- is seeking 800 older adults to participate in a study aimed at identifying biological markers of memory decline and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Ultimately, scientists hope that brain and biological changes can be detected before memory decline and other symptoms appear, allowing the effectiveness of drugs to be evaluated at the earliest possible time.

Safra Family Lodge on Thursday, May 26, at 2 p.m. This new addition offers a temporary residence for families and loved ones of adult patients who are receiving care at the NIH Clinical Center, the nation’s premier hospital for conducting clinical research — research involving patients. The Lodge opens its doors to guests on Wednesday, June 1.
